The sessions are usually held during lunchtime (12pm start time) in Room 312, Parnell Building.
Each month will be organised by a different research group.
Successfully stabilising Earth’s turbulent atmosphere for the transmission for free-space laser signals, will lead to advances in fields ranging from General Relativity, fundamental physics, and geodesy; to high-speed digital communications, quantum key distribution, and global navigation and positioning. In this talk, I will present our recent work on the transmission of phase-stabilised coherent laser signals over atmospheric horizontal links up to 2.2 km in length (horizontal links of this length have previously been shown to exhibit similar levels of total atmospheric turbulence as vertical ground-to-space links). We demonstrate suppression of atmospheric phase-noise by more than three orders-of-magnitude; representing a ten-fold improvement over the previous state-of-the art. In additional, we are adding spatial-mode stabilisation (active optics via tip-tilt control) to extend the atmospheric transmission range; and a novel broadband phase-stabilisation technology, to enable high-speed free-space optical communications. Our laser link design comprises only simple optics and electronics, making it ideally suited for space-based deployment and/or mobile ground terminals.
