2022 EQUS Workshop Competitions

Competitions

During the EQUS Annual Workshop, there are three ways in which you can showcase your research to the rest of the Centre.

Poster Competition

A research poster is a visual presentation of your research and findings. It should be concise and focused and explain your research using images, graphs, charts, tables and/or other visual strategies with minimal supporting text.

  • Digital poster files are due to Sarah Allen – sarah.allen@uq.edu.au – in PNG format by Monday 21 November.
  • Printed posters should be brought to the event and provided to a member of the EQUS operations team at registration. Printed posters should be A0 size (841mm x 1189mm) and in portrait format.
  • Printed posters will be displayed from the first break on day one through until the afternoon of day two.  The dedicated poster session will take place on day one between 4.30pm and 6.30pm.  Poster authors should be available to attend this session in order to meet with judges and workshop attendees.
  • A first, second and third place winner will be announced at the EQUS Awards Dinner.
  • Please contact Angela Bird – a.bird1@uq.edu.au – if you have any questions.

3 Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition

A 3MT competition cultivates an individual’s academic, presentation and research communication skills, and increases the capacity to effectively explain their research in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.

  • 3MT presentations will be delivered live on day two of the workshop. The 3MT session is currently scheduled to take place at 3.30pm (AEDT) on Tuesday 6 December.  Presenters will be contacted directly with regard to their specific presentation time.
  • A single static PowerPoint slide is permitted.  No slide transitions, animations or ‘movement’ of any description are allowed.  The slide is to be presented from the beginning of the oration.
  • No additional electronic media (e.g. sound or video files) are permitted.
  • No additional props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are permitted.
  • Presentations must stay within the 3 minutes indicated and competitors exceeding 3 minutes will be disqualified.
  • Presentations are to be spoken word (e.g. no poems, raps or songs).
  • Presentations are to commence from the venue stage.
  • Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter starts their speech.
  • Judging will take place during the workshop and will be decided by workshop attendees through the slido app (more information to follow about slido). A first, second and third place winner will be announced at the EQUS Awards Dinner.
  • Please contact Angela Birdc– a.bird1@uq.edu.au – if you have any questions.

Pitch Competition

A Pitch competition cultivates an individual’s ability to ‘sell their research’ to an informed or expert audience such as a potential employer or investor.  Could your research help industry or benefit society? Participate in the EQUS Pitch Competition to explain how your research idea will generate impact.

  • Pitch presentations will be delivered live on day one of the workshop. The pitch session is currently scheduled to take place at 12pm (AEDT) on Monday 5 December.  Presenters will be contacted directly with regard to their specific presentation time.
  • Presenters will have 3 minutes to persuade the judging panel and then one minute to answer a follow up question from the judging panel.
  • In the allocated 3 minutes the presenter must define the problem or opportunity, explain the solution and describe how they will achieve this.
  • A maximum of three PowerPoint slides are permitted.  The slide presentation should start at the beginning of the oration.
  • No slide transitions, animations or ‘movement’ are allowed.
  • No additional electronic media (e.g. sound or video files) are permitted.
  • No additional props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are permitted.
  • Presentations are to be spoken word (e.g. no poems, raps or songs).
  • Presentations are to commence from the stage in the relevant venue.
  • Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter starts their pitch.
  • Judging will take place following the pitch session during the workshop via a three-person judging panel. A first, second and third place winner will be announced at the EQUS Awards Dinner.
  • Please contact Angela Bird – a.bird1@uq.edu.au – if you have any questions.
