A 3-person US delegation from technical colleges across the country and funded by the National Science Foundation were in Queensland 31 July and 1 August to learn about our quantum education approaches and to seek collaboration in developing a quantum technical workforce development program. Their brief visit was curated by EQUS AI Russell Manfield, wrapping a 2-week tour of Australian quantum facilities covering Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane & Sydney.
After touring the lab facilities at UQ & ANFF as well as visiting the UniSQ campus at Springfield, they were hosted by the state Department of the Environment, Science & Innovation (DESI) where a range of officers from DESI, Education Queensland and CSIRO exchanged plans for crafting greater quantum workforce readiness.
The delegation also met with Psi Quantum to explore new ways to meaningfully contribute to their emerging workforce needs, both at their new site adjacent to Brisbane Airport as well as their recently announced site in Chicago. One of the delegation, Grant Emmel, conducts quantum training programs at Madison Technical College in Wisconsin with close links into quantum resources in the Chicago area. Another delegate, Jared Ashcroft, serves as director for the Micro Nano Technology Education Center at Pasadena City College and California State University, responsible for the quantum workforce readiness program operating across the US.
Delegation leader, Mo Hasanovic from Indian River State College, Florida and Syracuse University, New York State is crafting a report to NFS on the tour and the opportunities available for US-Australia collaboration in developing quantum workforce readiness. This report will serve as a basis to further our shared goals, as well as opening another avenue to consolidate the EQUS legacy for many years to come.
The Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems (EQUS) acknowledges the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and their continuing connection to lands, waters and communities. We pay our respects to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and to Elders past and present.
