A Quantum Masterclass: Macquarie Experience Inspires the Next Generation

On 6 May 2024, Macquarie University hosted an unforgettable deep dive into the wonderful world of quantum physics, captivating an audience of young and curious minds through the Macquarie Experience. Led by Dr Lachlan Rogers, Dr Sarath Raman Nair and a dedicated team of early-career researcher volunteers, this event transformed cutting-edge science into something not just understandable, but exciting, interactive—and even funny.

Part of EQUS' showcase celebrations and the International Year of Quantum, the Macquarie Experience stood out for its bold and creative approach. From giant gym balls to mind-bending sound bites, lasers, ropes, and quantum-inspired art, participants were treated to a feast of hands-on demos and playful yet powerful explanations of quantum concepts.

Around 40 attendees engaged deeply during a lively Q&A and hands-on exploration, asking thoughtful questions and diving headfirst into experiments designed to bring quantum mechanics to life. A lucky few got to steer laser beams, tangle themselves in quantum rope analogies, and walk away with original pieces of quantum art.

Centre Director Andrew White described the event as “a masterclass in public lecturing,” commending Lachlan Rogers for his ability to connect with audiences of all backgrounds and make quantum physics not only accessible but unforgettable. So impressed, in fact, that he extended an invitation for Lachlan to bring the show to Brisbane during National Science Week in August.

Events like these highlight the power of creative science communication, especially when led by passionate researchers eager to share their love of quantum. The Macquarie Experience showed how a strong mix of fun, clarity and engagement can turn complex ideas into sparks of curiosity—and maybe even future careers in quantum science.
