What if robots were soft?

David Howard (CSIRO)
Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of soft robotics! Unlike the hard, rigid robots you may be familiar with (Cylons, Terminators, and the like), these robots are inspired by flexible and deformable natural creatures such as the elephant or the octopus. They can adapt like animals and use extremely unconventional technology!

Quantum schmuantum, or, how I learned to stop worrying and love quantum

Andrew White (University of Queensland)
We don't normally think of it this way, but quantum phenomena surround us. This talk starts with a leaf, works its way through an iPhone and a red blood cell, and ends up with us exploring quantum technologies—that use all the features of quantum mechanics—to allow us to do very cool things. If we have time, we'll look at some of the new Australian companies driving the quantum revolution, and discuss how we can all get involved.
