On 16 May 2022, there are free public screenings of the film Picture a Scientist followed by a live-streamed panel discussion on how to make science more diverse, equitable and open to all.
Picture a Scientist is a feature-length documentary film chronicling the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. A biologist, a chemist and a geologist lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences—overcoming brutal harassment, institutional discrimination and years of subtle slights—to revolutionise the culture of science. From cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we also encounter scientific luminaries who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable and open to all.
This event is presented by the Australian Academy of Science, the Australian Academy for Health and Medical Sciences, the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, the Australian Research Council, the ARC Training Centres for Joint Biomechanics, Information Resiliance, Innovative BioEngineering and Surface Engineering for Advanced Materials (SEAM), and the Australian Cobotics Centre.
