Women in STEM often face unique challenges, from under-representation to the pressures of navigating male-dominated spaces. EQUS worked to lessen these barriers by fostering an environment where women can thrive – personally, professionally, and academically.
In 2019, EQUS launched the Deborah Jin Fellowship program to increase the proportion of women at EQUS and in quantum physics through targeted recruitment.
Deborah Jin was an American physicist and one of the world’s foremost experts on how ordinary atoms and molecules change their behaviour at extraordinarily low temperatures. Her visionary and methodical approach made it possible to use these ultracold gases as model systems to tease out the quantum principles that lead to behaviour such as superconductivity.
EQUS’ Deborah Jin Fellowship program honours her legacy by supporting and encouraging early- and mid-career women in physics.
EQUS played an active role in promoting equity, diversity and inclusion – not just within the Centre, but across its partner institutions and the wider quantum science community.
The Deborah Jin Fellowships remain part of EQUS’ legacy, reflecting a commitment to long-term change in the field.
