EQUS Annual Workshop 2021

Competitions

During the EQUS Annual Workshop, there are three ways in which you can showcase your research to the rest of the Centre.

Poster Competition

A research poster is a visual presentation of your research and findings. It should be concise and focused and explain your research using images, graphs, charts, tables and/or other visual strategies with minimal supporting text.

  • Posters are due to Angela Bird - a.bird1@uq.edu.au - by Monday 22 November.
  • Posters to be one portrait A0 poster (841mm X 1189mm).
  • All posters will be displayed via a dedicated SLACK Channel in the week preceding the Workshop.  EQUS members will be notified of timeslots when they can view the posters and submit questions to the authors on SLACK.
  • During the workshop printed posters will only be displayed at the venue the author is attending.  There will be a dedicated session at each venue where all attendees can review posters and ask questions of the authors.  Please consult the program to find out the day and time your session is scheduled.
  • Judging will take place during the workshop and will be decided by workshop attendees through the slido app (more information to follow about slido). A first, second and third place winner will be announced at the EQUS Awards Dinner.
  • Please contact Angela Bird - a.bird1@uq.edu.au – if you have any questions.

3 Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition

A 3MT competition cultivates an individual’s academic, presentation and research communication skills, and increases the capacity to effectively explain their research in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.

  • 3MT Presentations will be delivered live during the 3MT Session of the EQUS Annual Workshop.  The session is scheduled for the first day of the workshop, Wednesday 1 December at 4.30pm (NSW), 3.30pm (QLD) and 1.30pm (WA).  Presenters will be contacted directly with regard to their specific presentation time.
  • A single static PowerPoint slide is permitted.  No slide transitions, animations or ‘movement’ of any description are allowed.  The slide is to be presented from the beginning of the oration.
  • No additional electronic media (e.g. sound or video files) are permitted.
  • No additional props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are permitted.
  • Presentations must stay within the 3 minutes indicated and competitors exceeding 3 minutes will be disqualified.
  • Presentations are to be spoken word (e.g. no poems, raps or songs).
  • Presentations are to commence from the stage in the relevant venue.
  • Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter starts their speech.

Pitch Competition

A Pitch competition cultivates an individual’s ability to ‘sell their research’ to an informed or expert audience such as a potential employer or investor.  Could your research help industry or benefit society? Participate in the EQUS Pitch Competition to explain how your research idea will generate impact.

  • Pitch Presentations will be delivered live during the Pitch Session of the EQUS Annual Workshop.  The session is scheduled for the second day of the workshop, Thursday 2 December at 3.30pm (NSW), 2.30pm (QLD) and 12.30pm (WA).  Presenters will be contacted directly with regard to their specific presentation time.
  • Presenters will have 3 minutes to persuade the judging panel and then one minute to answer a follow up question from the judging panel.
  • In the allocated 3 minutes the presenter must define the problem or opportunity, explain the solution and describe how they will achieve this.
  • A maximum of three PowerPoint slides are permitted.  The slide presentation should start at the beginning of the oration.
  • No slide transitions, animations or ‘movement’ are allowed.
  • No additional electronic media (e.g. sound or video files) are permitted.
  • No additional props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are permitted.
  • Presentations are to be spoken word (e.g. no poems, raps or songs).
  • Presentations are to commence from the stage in the relevant venue.
  • Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter starts their pitch.
  • Judging will take place following the pitch session during the workshop via a three person judging panel. A first, second and third place winner will be announced at the EQUS Awards Dinner.
  • Please contact Angela Bird - a.bird1@uq.edu.au – if you have any questions.
